Day 20 - The Street to the End

Well it had finally arrived.  The last 16 miles, and we knew it would be tough with lots of climbing.
The Sun treated us this morning and we set off early so we were ready to climb back up the 3 miles of The Street to the Pennine Way.

Still  half asleep!!

The ascent!  Climbing up through the valleys.

Looking towards the top!

Finally at the top and in sunglasses.  It's still sunny!

Getting higher and enjoying looking back!

Pennine flagstones to cross a bog!!!! Finally!

Top of the world yet?

Finally made it to the top

Now for the steep descent!

.... and back up again!

The last panoramic view.

Now heading down the Scottish side.

Back on the ground, near the end

Kirk Yetholm.  The end comes into view!

The finish of The Pennine Way.
A windswept pair.

We made it.  The End!

Time for bubbly!!

We deserve this.  A nice glass of pol Roger champagne !

Time for a drink... The perfect end!!!!!

Both Sharon and I would like to thank everyone who supported us in this
so that our chosen charities can benefit.

Thank you for your sponsorship on our Virgin giving pages.  Thank you to our 3 wonderful Sherpas who gave up their time and looked after us.

And  thank you to our Pennine Way wine supplier who kept us supplied throughout our journey.....very much appreciated!!!

Love Marcia and Sharon xxx

Day 19 - Roman Camp to The Street

As this is such a long stretch its impossible to complete in one go without a 'dip' down to the bottom and climb back up the next day!

You can see the outline of the old Roman Fort where the soldiers stayed to keep the Scots at bay!

As we continue on, bogland again! Distant views good though

The shelter. In case you get caught up there!

As we moved on from the hut at Lamb Hill we saw these wild goats

The shelter hut left behind, we continue into the wilderness.

A sign!!! This was it for us today.  Just the 3 miles down to the road now!

Somewhere down there is a road....just have to find it!

No one here but us!!!!

Day 18 - Whitley Pike to Roman Camps on the Cheviots - 235 Miles now completed

Weather was dry today which was great! Mind you no change on the first 4 miles.
Sopping wet marsh land with many places over ankle depth, so wet feet again!!!!

Crossing Padon Hill. This got wetter and wetter. The forest ahead was our goal.

After our 4 miles we then moved onto Redesdale Forest which had a great track for 5 miles.
We were so grateful!!!! Could still hear the squelch of water in our boots though!

We arrived at Byrness at lunch time and our Sherpa met us to collect Toby and brought us dry boots! Toby was ready for a rest after 9 miles.

... and our Sherpa brought tea!!!

Along with a slice of freshly baked Victoria sponge cake bless her!

And tea in proper mugs!!!! She's so good to us

With lunch over we set off again out of Byrness up to the Cheviots and this was the view after a long climb up Byrness Hill

This is heading along the final stages of our walk ...we saw no one and it's very desolate

Day 17 - Leadgate to Whitley Pike - 221 miles completed

We started today crossing muddy farm land, but we were in for a treat as by 11.15am
we had walked the 5.5 miles back to our current home in Bellingham.

We were welcomed at our cottage by Sherpa Nettie with tea and freshly baked brownies!
(She's so good)

The next part of the walk took us back to familiar territory ....moorland!
We wondered what joys awaited!

Same old scene as we crossed high stead hill!

And onwards to Lough Shaw. More of it!

Reaching the top of Deer Play, you won't be surprised to know there was no one but us there!
Quite bleak, but a signpost confirmed us in the right place!

Views from Deer Play nice though!

Onwards to the last bit along Whitley Pike and the hailstones arrived!!!!

But look what Sherpa Nettie prepared to warm us up when we got back!!!

Day 16 - Lowtown to Leadgate - 209 miles completed

The sun was out today but it was windy!!!! Fantastic morning along Hadrians wall ....the afternoon commenced of miles of marsh land again ...and of course they were wet and boggy! Yuk

As we continued along Hadrians Wall, we came across a fort

We walked 8 miles along the wall today - absolutely stunning!!

From the top of the wall looking down.

Sharon climbing over yet another style

Hadrians Wall as we approach Peel Crags with Crag Lough at the end.

And turning from the wall towards more marshland! Wet feet time and on to South Work Forest in the distance.

We didn't bother taking any more pictures, as once you've seen one marsh you have seen them all....Hadrians wall was a real highlight!
